Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Description
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is an important topic, especially in schools. FGM is illegal in England and Wales under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003. During this course we will look at what FGM is, the cultural and social aspects of FGM, how teaching staff can support victims and the other legislations. All teachers have a statutory duty under Section 5B to report to the police where they discover (either through disclosure by the victim or visual evidence) that FGM appears to have been carried out on a girl under 18. Those failing to report such cases may face disciplinary sanctions.

The aims of the course are:

To understand FGM, what it means and to identify those that are at higher risk.
To consider the risk indicators before and after FGM is performed.
To look at relationship and sexual education in schools and how to build good communication skills with parents.
To identify key legislation surrounding FGM and how we can support and protect children and young adults.
To consider cultural and social factors surrounding FGM.
To look at ways teaching staff can support a child if they raise a concern.
